Clove essential oil to bring warmth and joy during the Festive Season

Are you Looking forward to Christmas…I am!

As this magical time of year draws in, it’s hard not to experience a mixed bag of emotions as we also navigate the unease of Covid’s developments; the vaccine, ever changing tiers, news coverage, we won’t be able to see all the family and friends we want to see …

All these things are out of our control, BUT there are things we can do in our homes to feel festive, uplift our moods, and bring warmth into our hearts…

Clove is very distinctive aroma during the Holiday Season: it is sweet and spicy.

But clove is more than just an aroma, it’s quite a potent essential oil, with many health properties: It is used to generate warmth and to eliminate any condition associated with cold, analgesic, strong antiseptic, digestive and anti-spasmodic, a physical and mental tonic.

So how can we use Clove essential oil to bring warmth and joy during the Festive Season?

Essential oils like Clove that are applied to the skin and usually increase local blood circulation, are called “rubefacients” or warming. They also influence at a deeper level within the body providing analgesic, pain relieving and anti-inflammatory actions.

Rub Clove essential oil at the bottom of your feet before going out to keep your feet warm. Remember in 20 mins is in every cell of the body delivering analgesic, pain relieving, anti-inflammatory effects.

In a 10ml roller only 1 drop of clove to apply at the bottom of the feet. One drop is enough as it may irritate the skin.

The dental value of clove is well known, owing to the analgesic effect. Our grand grandparents were using clove buds to fight toothaches and oral infections. The essential oil can be applied on a small piece of cotton bud directly to the decayed part of the tooth, without pressure, avoiding contact with the gums. A side note: if the gum is inflamed use castor oil on piece of cotton, it will draw out the infection. There are natural toothpaste and mouthwashes with Clove, which also helps to alleviate bad breath. It is thought that the analgesic effect of Clove is due to the anti- inflammatory and detoxifying properties. That is why is also very good to Alleviate arthritis, rheumatism and sprains. Again, very well diluted and could be enhanced with Black Pepper, Marjoram, Ginger or for a fresher approach Peppermint or Rosemary.

Clove oil has strong antiseptic properties because of the high proportion of Eugenol:  antifungal, antibacterial, anti-viral it may be used for the prevention of colds and flu.

An effective antimicrobial blend for the diffuser with Clove essential oil may include Lavender, Lemongrass, Lemon, Tea tree or Thyme. After 3 hours of diffusing Clove with Lemon, you killed 90% of airborne bacteria.

Remember to use an ultrasonic diffuser to protect the qualities of the essential oil.

A homemade Spray Mist with Clove may include Orange, Siberian Fir, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Rose, Nutmeg or Mandarin.

You can use a base of Witch Hazel, or alcohol and water, or vodka.

Spray over the Christmas tree and places where the family spend time together. It brings a warm lovely scent of Christmas throughout the house, refreshing and uplifting, helping with anxiety, uplifting mood, and! you are preventing colds and flu at the same time without nasty and synthetic smells.

I prepare a hand sanitiser with Aloe Vera and alcohol, Clove and Cinnamon for the highly antibacterial benefits, plus Lemon, Melaleuca and Cedarwood essential oils for the antiviral properties.

Aloe Vera and Cedarwood support your skin. If you can open your hand sanitisers you can add, every a 50ml, 4 drop of Clove and 4 drops of Cedarwood. You will provide warmth to your hands and moisturise to your skin. A cracked skin is an open door for viruses.

Because its digestive and antispasmodic it helps stimulate digestion, restores appetite and reliefs nausea and flatulence.   A Nice blend can include Coriander, Fennel, Ginger or Peppermint. Castor oil it’s also amazing to relieve stomach-ache and cramps + hot water bottle. Amazing for period pains.

Clove oil may be used as an insect repellent: place cotton balls with a drop of clove along window corners, or special damp places. Nice warm aroma, and no insects.

Clove bud oil is a very energising oil. Stimulates joy and cheer, it prepares us for action. It helps us move forward and make things happen. It awakens our senses and provides us with the confidence and the strength we need to handle tough times like the ones we are having now and not be afraid.
